What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy and counseling are terms that are often used interchangeably. It is a process of setting goals to improve an aspect of life that is causing distress. Therapy should help provide insight, understanding, and action steps to assist with change. Psychotherapy should serve to provide an increased feeling of well-being.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Therapy may be helpful to you if you are experiencing problems or symptoms that affect your ability to do your job, get along with people in your life, or manage your day to day responsibilities as a parent, partner, student, employee, or community member.

What should I expect when I come to therapy?

Your first appointment will focus on your therapist getting to know about you, the problems you are experiencing, and the history of those problems. Along with this assessment a treatment plan of goals will be established. Although you can expect the therapist to be asking a lot of questions, as a client, you should ask any questions that are on your mind, or will help to put you at ease about the therapeutic process.

How long can I expect to be in therapy?

The length of time any individual continues in therapy is highly individualistic. Usually therapy is concluded once the goals that were established at the onset of therapy have been met. This can happen in just a few sessions, or sometimes can go much longer. Talking to your therapist, and deciding together is the best approach in determining an appropriate duration of treatment.
